The Longest Night

We buried Max's ashes today, on the Winter Solstice, the day of the longest night of the year.

Max and Denny adopted each other 14 years ago, a long time to be friends.  We're lucky, I guess, although it doesn't feel like it today, a week after the sudden illness that took him.
Max was the smart one, the diplomat, the one who watched basketball with Denny and kept me company in the kitchen.  He loved baskets and boxes, he ate shoelaces and chased feathers.  He owned the red chair next to the fireplace and the sunny window with a view of birds and deer. His purr was almost inaudible but he always meowed when we spoke his name.

We miss him.

I'm glad the days start getting longer tomorrow.

Hi Kathleen,
I'm so sorry to hear about Max's demise and I feel with you. We know how sad it is to lose an animal companion. Here it happens quite frequently that cats disappear. We don't know why. Maybe coyotes, maybe other animals. This year we lost three of our cats [see here: http://pitstexasexpatblog.wordpress.com/2011/05/01/el-camote/]. But we also got a wonderful new one [http://pitstexasexpatblog.wordpress.com/2011/12/09/gimme-five/] and just now we have 5.
Best regards, and merry Christmas and a happy new year,
Pit

So sorry for your loss. People who've never had a pet companion/friend don't really know how much a part of our lives they become.

So sorry about your little friend. He was a very good age for a very good cat.

I'm so sorry about Max. The red chair will seem so lonely, for a while. Makes me cry, because it brings up memories of losing pets I've loved and lost.

Too many ashes this season.

I read Denny's moving account, and yours is such a good bookend to the memory of your good friend, Max.
